James 'Jim' McCann is best known as an Irish drug trafficker and former member of the Provisional IRA.[1] Howard Marks was involved with McCann for several years in smuggling hashish from Afghanistan through Irish ports, specifically Shannon Airport, to the United Kingdom via Milford Haven, Wales.[2] McCann escaped Belfast's Crumlin Road Prison in 1971,[3] and was recaptured in 1979 and held in Portlaoise Prison. He was imprisoned at various times in Germany, France, Canada, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland on drug or IRA related matters. The Provisional IRA reportedly punished him for his involvement in the drug trade with a beating, but the attack may have been merely for appearances since they could have killed him and did not. He was last seen in South America and his whereabouts are unknown.[4]
