The town was formed through a [[Gappei|merger]] on October 1, 2005, when the towns of [[Shizugawa, Miyagi|Shizugawa]] and [[Utatsu, Miyagi|Utatsu]], both from [[Motoyoshi District, Miyagi|Motoyoshi District]], merged to form the new town of Minamisanriku.
