Clay Shirky is a writer, consultant and teacher on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies. He teaches New Media at New York University's (NYU) graduate Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). His columns and writings appeared in Business 2.0, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Harvard Business Review and Wired .
==Shirky's Law This is an observation originally made about the Blogosphere by Clay Shirky [1] that has been adaged by Hugh MacLeod [2] as:
- Equality, fairness, opportunity: pick two.
Examples
Although coined to explain the Zipf distribution of blog attention, it is trivial to expand the law to other systems. For example, in economic systems:
- Fairness and Opportunity
- Capitalism, which will always have inequal distribution of wealth.
- Equality and Fairness
- Communism, which must not allow opportunities for inequality.
- Equality and Opportunity
- Socialism, which allows competition, but unfairly (see Libertarianism) redistributes the wealth of successful participants.
