On 9 April 2011, seven people were killed by a gunman who entered the Ridderhof mall, in Alphen aan den Rijn, South Holland, the Netherlands,[5] a suburban city 15 miles (24 km) south-west of Amsterdam.[6] Using an automatic weapon, 25-year-old Tristan van der Vlis shot several people and then himself. As of 9 April 22:00 CET, seven deaths had been reported and "at least 16" wounded.[7]

Shooting

A gunman armed with an rifle, who witnesses said was white, approximately aged 25, and had curly blonde hair, entered the Ridderhof mall, and shot at least seven people dead before turning the weapon on himself. Many shoppers in the centre panicked before it was evacuated and cordoned off.[1] Later that day, one of the injured passed away, raising the total number of dead to seven.[8] The gunman left a note in his car stating that bombs had been left in three malls in the city; these malls were subsequently evacuated.[9] Children were among the victims, but it is not yet known if they were among the dead.[2]

Minister of Justice Ivo Opstelten said he was "shocked" and called the event a "great drama for Alphen aan den Rijn and for the Netherlands as a whole" [2].

The acting mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, Bas Eenhoorn, offered condolences to the families of the victims. "It's hardly credible that our town could experience such slaughter, and on a day as beautiful as this," he said.[1]
