Spencer has a reputation as a gifted teacher and mentor of young writers. Invited by legendary Alfred Knopf editor and author Gordon Lish to read in New York city, writer J.R. Rodriguez says that Lish told him that Spencer's then-students at Brigham Young University were writing better (and publishing more) than the graduates of the most prestigious writing programs in the country. "And he's in fucking Utah," Lish, former Esquire fiction editor said, "that tells you how impressive a feat it is." Barry Hannah (often himself called a "writer's writer") told Rodriguez that Spencer was a "writer's writer's writer." Spencer's students have gone on to publish, teach, earn Ph.Ds, and work in many varied fields. Among them David Veloz (who wrote Natural Born Killers and wrote and directed Permanent Midnight starring Ben Stiller), authors Brian Evenson, Derek Gullino, Luara Rhoton McNeal, J.R. Rodriguez, and Lara Candland Asplund.
