On Febuary 14,1980 Knotts was in the field for the first Twin 125 race at Daytona International Speedway, hoping to qualify for that Sunday's Daytona 500. However his hopes dwindled as his underpowered Oldsmobile quickly lost positions. On the 14th lap, his hood flew up as he was racing down the back straightaway, causing him to lose all visibility. Knotts spun out and struck the outside retaining wall drivers side first. The poor safety system in the car allowed Knotts' head to hang out of the car and strike the wall also,killing the 28 year old instantly. <ref>Holliman, Ray. Knotts was attempting to qualify for the [[1980 Daytona 500]] via the [[Gatorade Duel|Twin 125's]], a race to get in the 500.
Knotts was running considerably back when his hood blew off on the 15th lap of the race. He hit the outside wall before skidding and sliding into the inside wall, thoroughly destroying the car. Benny Richard Knotts (May 23, 1951 - February 14, 1980), was an American ASA and NASCAR Winston Cup driver. The Paw Paw, Michigan driver began his career in 1974 and raced in various stock car series for 6 years before dying in a crash at Daytona in 1980.
