"Beat of My Drum" is a song by British recording artist Nicola Roberts, taken from her debut studio album Cinderella's Eyes. The song was released in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 5 June, 2011, as the album's lead single. The up-tempo pop song was written by Roberts, Maya von Doll, Wesley "Diplo" Pentz, and Dimitri Tikovoi, and produced by Diplo and Tikovoi.

Nicola Roberts Single peaked in the UK Charts with the position of number 27 the following week Nicola Roberts charted at 75.

Background

Following twenty-top ten singles, Girls Aloud announced a hiatus in 2009. In late 2010 reports surfaced that Roberts had begun working on solo material due for a 2011 release.[1] In August, Roberts said, "I've been in the studio non-stop doing all of my own song writing."[2] The News of the World reported in December 2010 that Roberts had signed with Universal.[3]

Nicola Roberts announced "Beat of My Drum" as her first single in May 2011 with the launch of her official website and Twitter account. Produced by Dimitri Tikovoi and Diplo,[4] Roberts described it as "a fun record." She stated, "It was important my first single was different to anything else around. I love that it's a song everyone can sing and dance along to.”[5] The single premiered on Thursday, 2 June, on BBC Radio 1's The Scott Mills Show.[6] The song will have its live debut on The Late Late Show on 10 June.

Critical reception

"Beat of My Drum" received generally positive reviews from music critics. Michael Cragg of The Guardian said the song is "one of the best pop singles of 2011 so far." He said the song "features staccato beats, chant-like vocals and a great drum breakdown two-thirds of the way through. The chorus [...] is like a brilliant amalgam of Justice vs. Simian's We Are Your Friends and Daphne & Celeste, both ridiculously cool and slightly naff."[7] Popdust described the song as a "summer jam" with "glimmers of that too-brief cheerleader-pop trend from years past in the chorus, some wacky autotune-as-instrument, and enough determination in lyrics and sound to crack what’s looking like the entire Internet."[8] Heatworld.com stated emphatically, "We adore Nicola’s single, and we know we’re going to be dancing to it all summer long."[9] Peter Robinson of Popjustice named "Beat of My Drum" the site's Song of the Day, stating it "hardly happened by accident but at the same time it feels really carefree and spontaneous. [...] It's basically fucking amazing."[10] In an earlier review, Robinson stated that the song "sounds like Daphne & Celeste vs Major Lazer vs Girls Aloud."[11] Maura Johnston of The Village Voice, meanwhile, stated that "it's part Go! Team, part Spice Girls, part "Run The World (Girls)," and all sugar-rush thrill."[12] The song also won the praise of celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.[13] Priya Elan of NME wrote, "It judders with a half- dancehall smile (you’re reminded of MIA’s early stuff) and a ‘Hollaback Girl’ poise. [...] ‘Beat Of My Drum’ is a brilliant pop moment from an unlikely source."[14] The single was later featured in the magazine's "On Repeat" playlist for the issue dated 4 June, with the magazine saying "hooking up with Diplo for a M.I.A./CSS monster whose 'L-O-V-E, dance to the beat of my drum' will catch out many an indie snob".[15]

The song was compared favorably to the solo output of Roberts' Girls Aloud bandmates Cheryl Cole and Nadine Coyle. Cragg of The Guardian stated, "While Cheryl and Nadine's solo output has been a tad, er, underwhelming, Girls Aloud's Nicola Roberts has teamed up with Diplo for one of the year's best pop singles."[7] Elan of NME wrote, "Neither, of course, had the spit, giggle, bloody minded weirdness of Xenomania’s Girls Aloud however. That is until Nicola Robert’s solo single."[14]

Music video

For the song's music video, Roberts "is seen busting some moves with a group of dancers in what looks to be some sort of jazzed-up community hall."[16] She wears "a bizarre pair of 1970s-inspired pants," as well as "a long-sleeved zebra-print top" and "strappy heels."[6] Backed by three dancers, she performs in front of a large stack of speakers.[6] The video received its television premiere on T4 on Sunday, 5 June.[17] Tim Chipping of Holy Moly stated, "We must confess this isn’t quite the video we imagined for such a barnstorming British pop moment. But that's probably for the best."[18]
