It was created by a split from [[Stord]] on May 15, 1868. At that time Valestrand had a population of 900. On 1 January 1870 a district of [[Moster]] with its 247 inhabitants was moved to Valestrand. Also the home of the great and famous violinist and composer Ole Bornemann Bull (5 February 1810 17 August 1880).

It was created by a split from Stord on May 15, 1868. At that time Valestrand had a population of 900. On 1 January 1870 a district of Moster with its 247 inhabitants was moved to Valestrand. On 1 January 1964 Valestrand became a part of Sveio municipality. The village Valestrand is presently located in northern Sveio.

Valestrand was also the home of the famous violinist and composer Ole Bornemann Bull (5 February 1810 – 17 August 1880).
