The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Ernst-Wilhelm Modrow claimed 34 aerial victories, all of them at night; 33 in the Heinkel 219 Uhu.[Notes 1] In the 1950s he joined Bundeswehr, and retired 1964 as an Oberstleutnant.
