Cryoshell (stylized CRYOSHELL, formally C R Y O S H E L L) is a Danish rock band from Copenhagen, Denmark, formed in 2006. The line-up currently consists of lead vocalist Christine Lorentzen - who goes by her stagename/ nickname "Lore", lead guitarist Kasper Søderlund, keyboardist/ bassist/ backing vocalist Mikkel Maltha and unofficial drummer Jakob Gundel. In the band's early years they recorded several songs that were used as themes for the toy-line of the popular Lego theme Bionicle.

Cryoshell's genre of music has usually been classified as alternative rock or hard rock, even a crossover between the two. They have a style similar to that of bands such as Flyleaf and Evanescence (both of which are also fronted by a female musician), some fans and reviewers have even considered their sound to be a mix of Evanescence and Linkin Park.

History

The band formed in late 2006 when an employee of Advance (a creative agency located in Copenhagen) named Christine Lorentzen was asked to sing vocals for a one-off recording project at Hansen Studios, working alongside guitarist Kasper Søderlund, bassist Mikkel Maltha and keyboardist Søren Bendz, with Eddie Simonsen as the producer. The song recorded for the project was titled "Creeping in my Soul" and was used by Bionicle, a popular Lego toy theme (which is designed at Advance), as the soundtrack for their commericals and mini-movies in early 2007. The song proved to be very popular, rapidly becoming the most downloaded MP3 from the official Lego website.

Due to the popularity of "Creeping in my Soul", Søderlund and Maltha (the latter beginning to record keyboard in addition to bass) recorded a new song with Danish singer Niels Brinck called "Face Me", with Simonsen again serving as producer. The song again was used by Bionicle - as the soundtrack for their 2007 summer sets. The four later worked on a third song for Bionicle, which was released in early 2008 and named "Gravity Hurts".

In the summer of 2008, Simonsen and Brinck left the group, the latter being replaced by "Creeping in my Soul" singer Christine Lorentzen. With the release of their newest song for Bionicle, "Closer to the Truth", the newly-formed band began work on their first album under their own record label, Cryoshell I/S; hence the name of the band. Cryoshell later struck a deal with an East-European record label called Voices & Music Entertainment and began recording at Hansen Studios with producer Jacob Hansen. In 2009, the band released their first official single as an independent band, "Bye Bye Babylon". An alternative version of the song was used as the soundtrack for the direct-to-DVD film The Legend Reborn, the music video for the alternative version of the song is included an extra on the DVD. An extended version of the band version is featured on their self-titled debut album.

In 2010, Cryoshell hired a drummer, Jakob Gundel, released a second single; a re-recorded version of "Creeping in my Soul", and completed and released their long-awaited debut album in their homeland of Denmark on June 7th, which was later released as a digital download worldwide in February 2011. A global CD format release is currently being arranged.
