A parallel story concerns a stonecutter in the area in the 1920s who falls under the spell of his employer's daughter, Agnes.[2][3][4] This sub-plot re Anders' forbidden affair with his boss' spoiled daughter, interweaves elegantly with the modern day mystery .[5][6][7][8] Slow burning mystery full of homely cosiness? Some have criticised this tome for its overt nuclear-family framework. [9] Others might argue Läckberg’s works fuses everyday domiciliary minutiae with brutal serial killings using great skill: that her female characters rather than being facile are vanguards: Erika Falck combines investigative journalism with being a wife/mother, her sister Anna, coping with serious abuse.[10]Erica is being treated for serious post-postpartum depression.[11] More oppressive than its immediate predecessor the pain of the relatives of the victim is more touching, the characters more noticeably human.[12] The ending is surprising but draws all the carefully woven strands of the story together into an exciting conclusion.[13] The dark heart of Fjallbacka is reached inside to see if what beats still lives beneath its cold exterior.[14]

The Plot

The remote resort of Fjällbacka has seen its share of disaster , though perhaps none worse than that of the young child found in a fisherman′s net.[15] But the gruesome post-mortem shows that this is no case of accidental drowning; not by a long chalk.[16]The death of Sara, an eight-year-old girl is no less shocking for Patrik Hedström having just become a father.[17]This is a child both he and his partner Erica knew well.[18] It is his grim task to discover who could be behind the methodical murder.[19] [20] What he does not know is how this case will reach into the dark heart of Fjällbacka and the town′s past, and tear aside its idyllic façade, perhaps forever.[21]
