Kid Icarus: Uprising, known in Japan as Shin Hikari Shinwa: Parutena no Kagami (新・光神話 パルテナの鏡, lit. "New Light Myth: Palthena's Mirror"),[3][4][5] is an upcoming title for the Nintendo 3DS video game system, developed by Project Sora and to be published by Nintendo.[6] It is the third game in the Kid Icarus series and the first since 1991's Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, a nineteen-year wait referenced in the game's announcement trailer shown at E3 2010.[6] It is set for release on March 23, 2012 in North America[7] and sometime in March 2012 in Europe.

Story

The plot of Kid Icarus: Uprising follows the angelic protagonist, Pit, as he battles with the forces of a reborn Medusa who seeks to destroy mankind. Pit will also utilize the ability of flight granted by Palutena called the "Miracle of Flight" to aid him in flying to different worlds so he could fight massive monsters.[8] However, Pit finds himself also dealing with an evil clone of himself called Dark Pit.

Gameplay

Single player

The E3 2010 trailer of the game showed a mixture of both air and ground combat, featuring Pit battling monsters, including Twinbellows and Hewdraw, bosses from the first game, in his quest to stop Medusa.[9] Nintendo described the game as “a fast-paced and action-packed blend of aerial and ground-based shooting built on elegantly intuitive and streamlined play control. Boasting game play that is easy to pick up, but incredibly deep, the game is sure to satisfy novice gamers as well as fans who have been clamoring for a new installment in the franchise.”[8]

Pit will have multiple different weapons to choose from: Blade, Claws, Bow, Palm, Cannon, Mace, Arm, Staff, and orbs that orbit around the player have already been confirmed, with several others currently unnamed. Weapons are chosen for use in a level that is divided into three parts. The first is a flying section that requires Pit to fire at oncoming enemies while reaching his destination. The second is a ground part where Pit fights groups of ground enemies and advances to the area where the boss lies, and the third area is the boss battle that wraps up the level. The levels in the game will be called chapters. Like Nintendo's Star Fox series, there will be voice acting with Pit, Palutena, Medusa, and other characters speaking to each other during gameplay and cutscenes.

There will also be a red health bar with a wing icon on the upper left side of the top screen that shows Pit's endurance. It will go down each time Pit is damaged until it becomes empty and he dies. Various kinds of food, such as apples and chicken, are scattered throughout the level and replenishes Pit's health if he touches it, like in the Kirby series.

Multiplayer

The E3 2011 trailer depicted up to six players competing in either a Team Deathmatch or Free for All style multiplayer game. Weapons identical to the ones seen in singleplayer can be used against opponents (Fighters) in order to frag the opponent to win a match. Eventually, the losing team will have one of their players control Pit, who is more powerful than the average Fighter. Sakurai hasn't confirmed whether or not it will be online.

Development

The official teaser poster

Kid Icarus: Uprising is developed by Nintendo's Project Sora development studio[10] and built specifically for the Nintendo 3DS.[8] The game retains Pit and Palutena's new looks as introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.[11]

Sakurai claims this is his first non-Kirby title to be played in three dimensional perspective.[citation needed]

Reception

Kid Icarus: Uprising was nominated for Best E3 Trailer by GameSpot at E3 2010.[12]
