Diana Yukawa (ダイアナ 湯川, Daiana Yukawa) is an Anglo-Japanese solo violinist and songwriter. She has had two solo albums with BMG Japan, one of which opened to #1.
Early life
Diana Yukawa was born in Tokyo, Japan to English ballet dancer Susanne Bayly and Japanese banker Akihisa Yukawa one month after her father died in the 1985 Japan Airlines Flight 123 disaster.[1][2][3][4] Yukawa has lived in the United Kingdom since she was 2 months old and began learning violin when she was 5 years old.[2][5]
Because Diana was born after her father’s death, his name was excluded from her birth certificate until London's High Court in March 2000 ruled that she and her sister were his legal offspring.[2] The certificate was amended to include the name in June 2009.[6]
Career
Yukawa played during a memorial service for the Japan Airlines Flight 123 victims on August 12, 2009.
Her Japanese debut album La Campanella, released in 2000 on BMG RCA, became a No.1 best seller. It was released in the UK under the title Elegy in 2001. Her second album – works by Saint-Saëns with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was released in 2001. Her third album, The Butterfly Effect, recorded at Abbey Road Studios, was released on 21 October 2009.
She began learning the violin when she was five years old. She has performed at places such as St. James Piccadilly, Cadogan Hall, to 60,000 at Khalifa Stadium in Qatar (watch video of Diana at Khalifa Stadium) and to a sold-out crowd at the Hollywood Bowl. She has worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, and conductors Robin Stapleton and Grant Llewellyn.
Performance
Yukawa has performed solo at St. James Piccadilly, Cadogan Hall, to 60,000 people at the Khalifa Stadium [7] in Qatar, to a sold-out Hollywood Bowl and for the 2012 New Year concert at Burj in Dubai [8]. More recently the violinst has supported Katherine Jenkins at Cheltenham Racecourse,[9], The Tivoli Festival [10], Opened new music event Jam Dubai,[11] headlined at Kenwood House Picnic Concerts on 7 August,[12] performed music from Halo at the Video Game Awards 2010 [13] and opened the FINA world swimming championship in Dubai.[14]
