The Broadneck Peninsula is an area outside of Historic Annapolis, Maryland. The area is north of the Severn River, South of the Magothy River and west of the Chesapeake Bay. At the lower end of the Broadneck Peninsula is the 4.3 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge. This dual span bridge connects the Eastern and Western Shores of Maryland and includes the 786 acre Sandy Point State Park. This magnificent State Park on the Broadneck Peninsula is a recreational paradise with beaches and picnic areas that provide unparalleled views of the Chesapeake Bay and a host of summer and winter activities. The main marina offers 22 boat launching ramps for boats and personal water craft. There is also a small craft launch area for kayak, catamaran and hobby cats. Visitors to Sandy Point also enjoy wildlife viewing and bird watching.

History

The first colonial settlement on the Severn, and in Anne Arundel County, was settled in 1649 and called Providence (also called Towne Neck). It was abandoned in about 1670 because Annapolis had a better harbor. This "lost town" was in the Carr Creek watershed near Greenbury Point, across the river from Annapolis. It was on what are now grounds of Naval Station Annapolis (recently renamed Naval Support Activity Annapolis). The land on which it was located has probably all eroded away.

Communities

The Broadneck Peninsula is made up of a few highly regarded residential neighborhoods. St. Margaret's, Cape St. Claire and Arnold are the main known areas. Two postal Zip Codes are assigned to the peninsula, Annapolis, 21409 and Arnold, 21012. The Broadneck Peninsula is a great place to live, work and play.

Broadneck Park is also located on the peninsula; this park has two enclosed areas for dogs (small and large). Bay Hills Golf Club was designed in 1969 by renowned golf course architect Ed Ault. The scenic 18 hole golf course finds its beauty in its wooded rolling terrain.

Anne Arundel Community College is located in Arnold along College Parkway, and is annually rated one of the top community colleges in the nation.[citation needed]
