It is released on 14 September 2012[1] on 1750 screens in India and 350 screens overseas[2]. The title was earlier credited as Khamoshi and Silence.[3].

Plot

His parents named him Murphy, but everyone calls him Barfi! Always ready with a prank up his sleeve, he’s quite the charmer, especially with the ladies! In Darjeeling, Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) is the talk of the town. Even though he can neither speak nor listen! His bitter-sweet relationship with two beautiful young ladies, Shruti (Ileana D’cruz) and Jhilmil (Priyanka Chopra) sets in motion a chain of events that will turn his life upside down! UTV Motion Pictures and director Anurag Basu invite you to witness the amusing, naughty and sometimes crazy antics of Barfi. A heart-warming tale of selfless love and about finding happiness in the smallest things in life; that tells you no matter how tough your life may be, “Don’t Worry. Be Barfi!”

Production

Ranbir Kapoor[4] reportedly plays the role of a deaf-mute Nepali origin boy.[5][6] Priyanka Chopra will play the role of girl with autism.[7] In addition, Ileana D'Cruz will play the role of the narrator.[8] Basu confirmed that Katrina Kaif was the first choice for the role of the narrator, but she later opted out.[9] The film began shooting on 11 March 2011.[10] [11]

Music

Untitled

The music and background score of the film is composed by Pritam and most of them are plagiarized[12] . The soundtrack album has 6 songs.[13] A song named Ala Barfi! sung by Mohit Chauhan was released as a single track on 7th August 2012.[14]. Main kya karoon, a romantic number was released on 11th August 2012 which features Ileana D'Cruz & Ranbir Kapoor.[15][16] Priyanka Chopra was supposed to sing a track for the film but her contract with Universal Music prevents her from taking the offer.[17] There is also one more song titled Fatafati which will not be used in the final film, but was released on YouTube on 10th September 2012, as behind-the-scenes footage. It is merely a promotional track, sung by Pritam and Nakkash Aziz. Some additional vocals are sung by Ranbir Kapoor himself. Fatafati also has some Bengali lyrics, penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The song isn't in the actual album either, but it has become a major hit on YouTube, crossing 100,000 views in just 4 days.

Controversy
