Carol Milne (born March 10, 1962), is a Canadian sculptor living in Seattle, Washington. She is best known for her knitted glass work, winning the Silver Award, International Exhibition of Glass Kanazawa Japan 2010.

Career

Milne graduated in 1985 from the university of Guelph Ontario, in Landscape Architecture. “I spent many years avoiding being an artist[, taking] the circuitous route to Sculpture via Landscape Architecture.”

After a short stint at a landscape architects office, Milne worked at a pre-press graphics shop managing a small group of digital typesetters. In 1988-89 she was a graduate student in the University of Iowa's MFA program in sculpture.

1993 – 1996, Milne and Liza Halverson re-designed the Licton Springs Park Playground in Seattle, Washington., incorporating mosaic and tile elements with community volunteers.

Since 2000, Milne works primarily in glass, although kitting also plays a major part in her work, for example, “Grow Lights”.

Knitted Glass

In 2006, Milne developed “Knitted Glass”, incorporating the techniques of knitting, lost-wax casting, mold-making, and kiln-casting. As Milne describes in, “Knitting wasn't yet cool...” [link]: The process involves (A) knitting the original art piece using wax strands, (B) surrounding the wax with a heat-tolerant refractory material, (C ) then removing the wax by melting it out, thus creating a mold; (D) the mold is placed in a kiln where lead crystal “frit” heated to 1,530 Fahrenheit melts into the mold; (E) after the mold has cooled, the mold material is removed to reveal the finished piece within.

Personal Life

Carol Milne is married to Steve Isaacson whom she met in 1984 while attending a Landscape Architecture convention at Iowa State University. Carol and Steve have two daughters, Mara and Jasmine, both born in the United States.

In 2012, Milne became a United States citizen and registered to vote in the United States; “So I can vote for Obama."
