The Independence of Trujillo is an historical process that allowed the emancipation of the Intendance of Trujillo from the Spanish state. This historical process that ended the colonial period in the north region of Peru began in the city of Trujillo between 1820 and 1821. It was important because with this became independent of Spanish rule nearly all of northern Peru because the intendance of Trujillo had dominion over the current regions of Tumbes, Cajamarca, Amazonas, Piura, Ancash, Lambayeque and San Martín. It was an important fact that would later helped to get the Peruvian independence of the Spanish state to initiate the formation of an independent republic.

Communication with San Martin
After the landing of General Jose de San Martin in Paracas in September 1820, the Intendant José Bernardo de Tagle, who had come to the city the same year, he received a letter from San Martin dated November 20, 1820, inviting them to join the cause of emancipation, and Tagle accepted the invitation because people of Trujillo had ideas to be independant.[1]
Trujillo was the first city in Peru in getting the process of independence from Spain, to complete this it were realized the necessary acts that took place between 24 December 1820 and 6 January 1821.
The December 24, 1820, by town meeting, unanimously city population was agreed to declare its independence within days, for this was made the flag of Peru that was veiled with a guard of honor on the night of 28 December 1820.

On December 29 of each year in the city of Trujillo marks the anniversary of the Independence of Trujillo.
