History

Business partners David Liu, Carley Roney, Rob Fassino, and Michael Wolfson founded the Knot Inc. in 1996.[1] After the startup received seed financing from AOL, the partners launched The Knot brand as a portal on AOL.[2] In 1997, TheKnot.com launched on the internet.[3] Next, the company launched an online gift registry in partnership with QVC and published its first book, The Knot Complete Guide to Weddings in the Real World.[4] In December 1999, the company raised $35 million in an initial public offering.[5] In 2000, the company continued to expand by launching its own bridal magazine and the Knot Weddings Magazine is now published four times a year and is sold on newsstands.

In 2001 it acquired WeddingPages, Inc., a publisher of regional bridal magazines, to expand its magazine offerings to local markets. Today, The Knot publishes regional magazines in 17 markets in the US. Online, the company hosts wedding vendor listings in its online directories.

In 2004, the company launched a television series, Real Weddings from The Knot, on the Oxygen Network,[6] and in 2005 it launched a streaming online video channel, The Knot TV, that runs on TheKnot.com. In 2009, the company launched a wedding planning show, called The Knot LIVE, which streams in real time to TheKnot.com from its New York City headquarters once a week.

The Nest brand launched in 2005 with a website, and a magazine followed in 2006.[7] The brand serves cohabitating couples and newlyweds with lifestyle content about home décor, finance, making dinner, and getting along. The brand also has two books in print, The Nest Newlywed Handbook and The Nest Home Décor Handbook.

In 2005, The Knot created a CD of wedding music called, “The Knot Collection of Ceremony & Wedding Music.” The Company also partnered with American Express to offer a co-branded rewards card for The Knot and The Nest.

In 2006 the company acquired WeddingChannel.com, consolidating the bridal media industry.[8] The Knot Wedding Network, which includes TheKnot.com and WeddingChannel.com, reaches 8 in 10 US brides every year.[citation needed]

In 2008, the company launched TheBump.com to serve couples planning for their first child. The Bump Pregnancy Guides feature pregnancy-related content and local pregnancy & baby resources in a pocket-sized magazine distributed through OBGYN offices in 14 US markets.

In May 2012, the company overhauled its "community forums." The site's daily page views subsequently dropped.[9]

Mr. Liu has also served as the President of the company since October 2008, and served as President from May 1996 to October 2007. Carley Roney

Carley Roney is the co-founder and Chief Content Officer of The Knot. She married to David Liu in 1993, and half an year later, they established a digital media production company. However, Carley and David soon realized that they had grander aspirations for the emerging medium known as the Internet. They connected with two other NYU film graduates, Michael Wolfson and Rob Fassino, and brainstormed ideas to build a new brand with opportunities for revenue. In 1996, they launched the first site-The Knot. Carley Roney and David Liu first met when they were undergraduates studying film and television at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Both were in the prestigious Scholars program, although David was a senior when Carley was a freshman.[11]

Roney has been the driving force behind the brands’ expansion across multiple media platforms. She has created The Nest and The Bump brands for young couples and first-time parents—offering multi-media content, tools, and community platforms designed specifically for the unique needs of couples setting up homes and getting ready for baby. The Nest magazine and her latest book, “The Baby Bump”, a hip guide for modern pregnancy, will join the long list of popular wedding and newlywed books that she’s written. She is recognized and consulted as a mentor for women in business and entrepreneurs and frequently appears on television shows as well as gives advice in her syndicated, nationwide advice column “Ask Carley”.
