Roosh

Roosh Vörek, (known publicly by his first name alone Roosh) born on Flag Day (United States) June 14, 1979, is an American writer, blogger, and Youtube personality who specializes in sex tourism. Travelling to different countries around the world he writes books on the effective use of techniques called Game to seduce women at each destination. In his books as with his online presence, he uses "Roosh" or "Roosh V" as his pen name. By website traffic Roosh's website is perhaps the most visible in the collection of websites known as the manosphere.

Background

In his online autobiography Roosh states that he grew up in Maryland, USA and that after graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in microbiology, he began a career as an industrial microbiologist.[1]

Beginnings

In a separate online biography Roosh states that during the time when he was starting his career in science that he began a Pick Up Artist (PUA) blog called DC Bachelor. What started off as random thoughts entered on his various dating experiences turned into a lifestyle that involved teaching men about approaching women. His blogging turned into his first published book. Now the Bang series in which he instructs on the art of picking up women and to "bang" them, has experienced success all over the world.[2]

Pickup Style

Roosh V does not consider himself a pickup artist, but rather as someone skilled in the seduction arts which he refers to as Game. His signature style, on which he has written an entire series of travel guides, has been characterized as "how to cross international barriers in the art of the pickup". Roosh has branded his travel guides with the Bang series and program, and has received much press coverage both at home in the U.S. and abroad.

Targeting by the SPLC

In America, Roosh was placed on a list of serious threats, a so called “misogyny” list by the Southern Poverty Law Center in their quarterly Intelligence Report[3]. However the targeting of an individual pickup artist by an agency normally concerned with domestic terrorism and neo-Nazi groups was roundly ridiculed in the manosphere as well as being condemned popular media by Reason[4], The National Review[5]. , and Business Insider's Michael Brendan who commented that the SPLC was undermining it's credibility by essentially pursuing Roosh as a terrorist for "not calling women back after sex".[6] The public reaction prompted the SPLC to partially retract their list by stating those on it are not members of a “hate group.”[7] The Huffington Post wrote an article about his inclusion[8], along with the Danish media.[9]

In the News

In response to his travel guide Bang Iceland, the Icelandic gossip magazine DV wrote a number of stories about Roosh[10] [11] [12] [13]. In his online biography Roosh remarks that one writer in particular from the Icelandic Review had a lot of “personal anger” towards the book's release[14]. The book received coverage on Icelandic television and radio, including a live radio interview of Roosh in which he was asked if he was a “male slut.” Roosh said of the book "Iceland’s largest feminist organization condemned it entirely".[15] Similar coverage occurred in Denmark after he released Don’t Bang Denmark. Danish gossip magazine Ekstra Bladet wrote a number of articles on the book[16] [17] [18] [19] [20] before the topic hit Danish television for a ten minute panel discussion[15] on the books merits and on Roosh's hunt for a “poosy paradise”.[16] Roosh said of the matter: TV2 published point-counterpoint articles: Danish women are “angry and humorless”[17] versus “feminine and sexy”.[21] There was some sympathetic coverage towards the end, but hundreds of angry comments flooded my blog. Most said I was ugly and couldn’t handle “strong” Danish women.[19]

Scandinavian rage followed Roosh into other European countries. Roosh was written about in Estonia before he even arrived in the country[20], leading to what he describes as "a semi-organized movement to get me deported and prevent the publication of an Estonian bang guide".[22] Bang Estonia was still released, which provoked a number of additional articles about him in the Estonian media[23] [24] [25]. The Latvian media published some articles as well.[26] [27]

The reaction was much stronger in Lithuania, where his book received blanket coverage. Articles were written in Lithuania’s biggest news site[28], Cosmo magazine[29], and others[30] [31] [32] [33] [34]. In his online biography he states: "Many comments threatened me with death if I were to ever return. For fun I pranked the media with a bogus interview that made Lithuanians froth even more".[35]

Talk of his book Bang Colombia exploded in the Colombian media two years after it was originally released. It was criticized in El Pais, Publimetro, Terra, Vanguardia, La Region, Semana, and El Liberal, among others [36] [37] [38] [39] [40] [41] . Not long after, Roosh was mentioned in a critical Norwegian article about the rise of the manosphere.[42]

Interviews

In an interview published on Travel Sex Life.com Roosh was asked "So in response to the “game”, where, in your opinion, is the best place in the world to pick up women?" Roosh's reply was:

Scandinavia. Girls speak English, drink a lot, and put out extremely quickly. I had the fastest lays in my life in Iceland, often under an hour from meet to bang. My answer would change if you start talking about best places to get a feminine girl, loyal girlfriend, and so on, but for fast, no-strings-attached sex, it doesn’t get better than Scandinavia.[43]

Other Writing

Roosh has also written outside of the "love tourism" genre. His second book A Dead Bat in Paraguay which was published after spending six months in South America has been described as follows:

A Dead Bat In Paraguay is a true adventure story about a 28-year-old man who decided that the best way he could deal with his existential crisis was to sell his possessions, quit his professional career as a scientist, and hop on a one-way flight to Quito, Ecuador in order to visit every country in South America.
