'''Under the Paving Stones, the Beach''' - June, 2011
*Using contemporary arts practitioners as a starting point, ''UNITED'' explored how collective and collaborative events could take shape to express and share ideas. With references to workers unions and other representative bodies, UNITED examined how the professional field of art operates without formal structures, resulting in a supportive and independent series of events that reflected the artist-driven sector and the many facets of social networks.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.artrabbit.com/uk/events/event/11603/superscript_alex_farrar_harry_meadley_and_iona_smith |title=superscript: Alex Farrar, Harry Meadley and Iona Smith at East Street Arts (ESA) |publisher=Artrabbit.com |date= |accessdate=2011-03-12}}</ref>

Featuring artists from across the UK – including artists resident in the area – it aimed to create social interaction and offered different opportunities to the public to engage with projects about what kind of art represented the locality. East Street Arts is a registered charity in England, established to facilitate the development of visual artists. The charity was set up in 1993 by Karen Watson and Jon Wakeman to provide space, services, facilities, opportunities and support for visual artists.[1] East Street Arts operates four sites in Leeds, England: Patrick Studios (ESA headquarters), Barkston Studios, Union 105 and other offsite projects.[2]

History

  • Founded in 1993 at East Street Mills, Leeds, England.
  • The studio complex at East Street Mills grew from 8 spaces in 1993 to 45 in 2002 with 90% occupancy.
  • East Street Arts relocated to Patrick Studios in May 2004.[1]

Notable projects

' Over Yonder - 2010

Andrew Lister - Solo Exhibition - April, 2010.

  • Works in the exhibition were related to a loose theme of 'conflict'. The artist used images of conflict in the popular mass media as a starting point for paintings on different materials, while working with the chiaroscuro (characterized by strong contrast between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition) method to link them directly to paintings of the past.[5]

Thunder in the Potty (curated by Amy Charlesworth) - October–November, 2009.

  • Two months of events exploring capitalism and collective thinking in contemporary society.[6]

UNITED - May–June, 2009.

  • Using contemporary arts practitioners as a starting point, UNITED explored how collective and collaborative events could take shape to express and share ideas. With references to workers unions and other representative bodies, UNITED examined how the professional field of art operates without formal structures, resulting in a supportive and independent series of events that reflected the artist-driven sector and the many facets of social networks.[7]

Multitude - November, 2008

  • A series of events that explored ideas of consumerism, collecting and hoarding through a variety of socially engaged art events, exhibitions, artist commissions and residencies.[8][9]
