Fergusson College is one of the elite colleges in western India, in the city of Pune. Built in 1885, the college was named after its first patron, Sir James Fergusson, the then governor of Bombay province who donated a then princely sum of Rs 1,200. The college is now under the jurisdiction of University of Pune.

After the Revolt of 1857, Indian luminaries of that period saw a pressing need to modernise its education system to fight against British imperialism. Stalwarts in the Indian independence movements such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Vishnushastri Chiplunkar G G Agarkar and Mahadev Namjoshi put in their collective efforts to in the formation of a modern school for Indians. The result was The New English School in 1857. Boosted by its success, the Deccan Education Society was formed in 1884 and a year later the Fergusson College was started. The college was inaugurated by William Wordsworth, the grandson of the poet William Wordsworth and principal of Bombay's Elphinstone College. Other stalwarts such as R G Bhandarkar and M G Ranadé played an important part in the construction of the college.

The British allowed the college to remain autonomous, giving it a free hand in education. The college on its part maintained a completely apolitical stance, choosing to rescind itself of politics, a policy that continues up to this day. The college has produced illustrious alumni such as Prime Ministers: PV Narasimha Rao and V P Singh. Political stalwarts such as Veer Savarkar, VN Gadgil, SM Joshi, Acharya Kriplani, mathematician D. R. Kaprekar, Nanasaheb Goré, humourist P L Deshpande, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, spiritual world teacher Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath and actress Smita Patil.

The main sections of the college include the Main Building, The Amphitheatre,The Physics,Chemistry,Zoology,Electronics and Economics Departments, the Wrangler R.P. Paranjpye building, the Gymkhana,The Canteen,Kimaya and its latest addition, the Academic Building.

One more famous feature of Fergusson College is "Kimaya", a popular student hangout built just behind the library. It is shaped like a house of cards, with V-shaped walls on all four sides. It was recently renovated by Paranjpye Builders.

Students take interest in intense academics when called for, but with a delicate balance and not without a fair share of movies and masti.

At any given moment, Fergusson's campus will have a variety of events and activities in progress. Some may be shooting a documentary, while others may be writing or directing plays, and others would be pursing some ground-breaking research to conclusion.

Calyx is the annual technical festival organised by the Computer Science Department of Fergusson College. Calyx constitutes of four major events in which students from local colleges in Pune compete with enthusiasm. Each event is designed to test and challenge a different ability and skill set amongst the contestants. This allows contestants to explore and unleash their strengths while identifying and making up for their weaknesses. The are the elite Programming Competition (where students have access to nothing but their own brains and experience to compete against each other), the technical Paper Presentation competition (where students must outdo each other in gathering, organising, collecting and presenting information, and also face rebuttle by fellow contestants), the Project Exhibition (where students can show their abilities at handling long-term projects and cooperative teamwork). In addition, Calyx also hosts many internal events like the Quiz Competition which is a big crowd-puller.

Calyx is organised purely by students with guidance from teachers. This gives students invaluable experience in interacting with experts from various fields of computing whom oblige us by serving as judges for these events.
