Gunapala set his mind on being an astronomer when he was a schoolboy, being motivated by a lecture given by veteran scientist Prof. [[Cyril Ponnamperuma]] and articles that appeared in Nawayugaya magazine. After working as an assistant lecturer for some time at the [[University of Colombo]], he was offered a scholarship to go to the US for his doctorate.

A few years later he joined [[Bell Laboratories]]. A few months later Gunapala moved to California and began working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Sarath Gunapala,(Sinhala:සරත් ගුණපාල) is a Sri Lankan solid-state physicist, Senior Research Scientist and Group Supervisor at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He works primarily in Quantum Well Infrared Photo Detecting. He is also a Board Member of Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector Technologies LLC.

QWIP technology

Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector is a digital sensor that is being utilized in numerous ways, not only by scientists but also by astronomers, meteorologists, firemen, and doctors alike. Among other things, QWIP cameras are used to detect smog, monitor volcanoes, detect both skin and breast cancer (at many institutions, including the University of Southern California's Children's Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University), and to find “hot spots” in forest fires.

This technology will revolutionize the way we develop new remote sensing instruments," said team leader Gunapala and added; "As a result of all our research work in last decade, QWIP technology has culminated as the most favorable highly sensitive multi-band large format focal plane array technology in long-wavelength infrared region.

Gunapala has introduced to the world, the "640x512 Pixels Long-Wavelength Infrared (LWIR) Quantum dot Infrared Photodetector (QDIP) Focal Plane Array Camera".

He hosted the Quantum Structure Infrared Photodetector (QSIP) 2009 International Conference in January 2009.

Personal life

Gunapala currently lives in the suburbs of Los Angeles, CA with his wife Vajira.[1] He has said in interviews that he likes to travel in his free time, especially to the east coast to visit his children.
