Eduardo Lopes

Eduardo Lopes (1917-1947), was a professional road and track portuguese rider.

Short biography

Born December 22, 1917, in the town of Socorro (Lisbon).
In 1937 he began his career as a rider of CUF team, as an amateur.
In 1939 becomes professional. From 1939 to 1947, get 15 wins in famous circuits at that time, as Bairrada, Mealhada, Torres Vedras, Malveira, Round to Lisbon, highlighting his victory in the classic Porto-Lisboa, in 1942, performed in a single step, with an approximate duration of 10 hours, with a distance of about 330 km, the longest world cycling route, and therefore, very prestigious, inside and outside Portugal. In 1939 obtains the 9th place in the Final General Classification of the Tour of Portugal. It was not his specialty, neither his favorite race. A distance runner and an endurance rider, as evidenced his victory in Porto-Lisboa, was also a sprinter, ranking in 2nd place in the National Championships of Speed ​​in 1944, serving the Iluminante team, what was the team prevailing on his career. In 1941, won the first two stages of the Tour of Portugal, in the team of Sport Lisboa e Benfica. Competition entries in Spain, is second in the Tour of Mallorca in 1942 and gets a 3rd place in the 3rd stage of the Tour of Spain at Badajoz, in 1945. In 1947, concludes his career at Sporting Clube de Portugal, winning the Circuit of Torres Vedras and getting the 1st place in the Prologue Stage 1 of the Tour of Portugal, on the runway of Jose Alvalade Stadium.
Died August 22, 1997, victim of a cerebral vascular accident (CVA), with 79 years of age.
