Rachel Gorelick Sterne Haot (née Sterne) is an American businesswoman and entrepreneur who currently serves as the Chief Digital Officer for the City of New York, heading the NYC Digital program funded by the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment.[1][2]

Career

In 2006, Haot founded GroundReport, a global crowdsourced news startup.[3] She also served as an adjunct professor of Social Media and Entrepreneurship at Columbia Business School.[4] In 2012, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum,[5] and serves on the digital advisory boards of Women@NBCU[6] and the 2014 Super Bowl Hosting Committee.[citation needed] She was recognized by Forbes in 2012 as part of their annual 30 under 30 list of "young disruptors, innovators and entrepreneurs"[7]

In 2011, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg named Haot to the post of Chief Digital Officer. Her responsibilities include developing the City's official digital roadmap,[8] expanding the reach of city-subsidized free Wi-Fi in city parks and subways, working with graduate schools to train more engineers, and extending the city's reach through social media.[9]. In May 2012, Haot and Mayor Bloomberg unveiled the Made in NY Digital Map, an interactive map that shows the locations of over 1,300 technology companies in New York City, and allows users to filter by hiring companies, visit job listings and add new startups to the map[10]. Currently the City of New York's Digital Roadmap focuses on five areas: Internet Access, STEM Education, Open Government, Digital Engagement and Technology Industry Support. A public progress report of the status of all Digital Roadmap initiatives is available on the NYC Digital website.

Haot was interviewed by WNYC in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, where she detailed the efforts her office was undertaking to bring the city back to its feet from a digital infrastructure standpoint, especially in Lower Manhattan.[11] Haot also spearheaded the City's first official hackathon, Reinvent NYC.GOV,[12] and the Reinvent Payphones Design Challenge, a competition sponsored by NYC Digital to promote the re-purposing of New York City’s public pay telephones.[13][14]

Personal life

Haot was born in Manhattan, and lived eight years in Brooklyn before moving to Dobbs Ferry, New York, where she grew up.[15] In July 2012 she married Max Haot, a Belgian-American who is the founder and chief executive of Livestream. The couple currently resides in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.[16] In 2011 Haot was featured in Vogue Magazine.[15]
