Bluestone 42 is an eight-part comedy drama about a British bomb disposal detachment in Afghanistan during Operation Herrick. The comedy focusses on the camaraderie between the soldiers, situational comedy, bureaucracy, conflicts of interests and relationships, and is contrasted with the deadly situations the soldiers are required to defuse. A major plot arc revolves around a will-they-won't-they relationship between the Captain and the Padre.

The series was filmed in South Africa. The name of the show refers to the unit's callsign. A Bluestone is an archaeological term for a rock which not native to the area, which has been moved a considerable distance and deliberately placed, in the same manner as an IED or landmine might be placed amongst stones on a dirt track.

The first episode was broadcast on Tuesday 5 March at 10:00pm on BBC Three.
