Evan Mandery, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1967, is an author and professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.[1][2] He lives in Manhasset, New York.
Career
Mandery graduated from Harvard College in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies.[3] Later he graduate from Harvard Law School as Juris Doctor in 1992.[4]He is an associate professor and chairperson of the criminal justice department, John Jay College of Criminal Justice.[1] His wife, Valli Rajah-Mandery, is a sociologist, and they have three children.[5][6] His first book was The Campaign: Rudy Giuliani, Ruth Messinger, Al Sharpton, and the Race to Be Mayor of New York City.[7][8][9] He was influenced by the writings of Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams.[10]
Works of Fiction
Dreaming of Gwen Stefani
Mandery's first novel Dreaming of Gwen Stefani was published in 2007.[11] A review about the book was available on Booklist magazine. [12][13] The novel deals with mathematical genius Mortimer Taylor Coleridge, a New York City hot-dog vendor, who falls in love with Gwen Stefani.[14]
First Contact (Or It's Later Than You Think)
Mandery's second novel, First Contact, Or, It's Later Than You Think, was published by HarperCollins in January, 2010.[15] It is a story of a hyper-intelligent, Woody-Allen, loving alien species and a dim-witted President, who is mistrustful of the aliens without basis. The book was generally well received.[16] The book got good feedback from magazines like Booklist, Publisher's Weekly and Library Journal.[17][18][19] It was also reviewed in printed edition of the newspaper Winnipeg Free Press.[20]
Q
Q was published by HarperCollins in August, 2011.[21] It is a story based on time travel, where the unnamed protagonist is visited by his future self and advised not to marry the love of his life, Q and then the story continues.[22] The novel received reviews on newspapers like The New York Times, Financial Times, Boise Weekly and Sacramento News.[23][22][24][25] The book also received reviews from TLS and Booklist magazine and Io9 blog.[26][27][28]
Q was published in the UK in July 2012 and thereafter translated into Italian (under the title Q una storia d'amore), Polish (as Q. Ponadczasowa historia miłosna), and Czech (as Má věčná Q).[26][29][30][31][32]
In November, 2011, Columbia Pictures optioned the movie rights to Q.[33] David Gordon Green was hired to write the screenplay and direct.[34][35][36]

Mandery began as a non-fiction writer and his first book The Campaign: Rudy Giuliani, Ruth Messinger, Al Sharpton and the Race to be Mayor of New York was published in 1999 by Westview Press.[37] His academic writing focuses on capital punishment and he has published a book on the subject named Capital Punishment in America: A Balanced Examination.[38]

Poker
Mandery is a successful amateur poker player.[39] He took second place in a preliminary event of the 2005 U.S. Poker Championship, winning $21,280.[40] He has career earnings of approximately $57000.[41]
