Studio Roosegaarde is the social design lab founded by designer Daan Roosegaarde.[1] The studio was founded in 2006 and is based in Waddinxveen, Netherlands. The studio recently opened a second office in Shanghai, China.[2] The team working at the studio focusses on exploring the relationship between people, art, space, and technology.[3]

Projects

Studio Roosegaarde’s projects can be and are deployed internationally as site-specific art installations; many can be modified for the specific context in which they are presented.

Dune: An exploration into the relationships between people and space, Dune is an interactive landscape consisting of several hundred light-emitting fibers that react and provoke based on the sounds and motion of passing visitors. [4].
Intimacy: An examination of the relationship between human intimacy and technology. Intimacy consists of a series of garments made from smart foils that become increasingly transparent based on the intensity of social interactions between people.[4]
Crystal: A thousand and one wireless light rocks which interact with people. The lighting behavior of Crystals moves from ‘excited’ to ‘bored’ to attract visitors’ attention, they also functions as a ‘digital campfire’ where people share stories of light or even steal them [5].
Smart Highway: A project developed around five energy-efficient concepts, Smart Highway is a proposal designed to improve highway safety and reduce transportation costs. This concept is being developed in collaboration with road manufacturer Heijmans [6].
