Sitaraman Sankaranarayana Iyer, also known as Prof. Sitaraman is a noted environmentalist and teacher from Aluva, Kerala, India. He has been active in the protection of rivers, water bodies and forests of Kerala. He is best known for his campaign on the protection of river Periyar and is the founder of several organizations such as the All Kerala River Protection Council.

Early life

Prof. Sitaraman was born on May 4, 1946 in Koovappady, Ernakulam district, Kerala. He obtained his undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc) degree in Chemistry from Maharaja's college, Cochin, Kerala in 1969.

He joined the department of Chemistry at Sree Sankara College, Kalady as a lecturer in 1970 and later on became the head of the Department of

Environmental activities

He is most noted for the protection of river Periyar from illegal sand mining. He was also the one who planted trees along the banks of river Periyar at Aluva Manappuram, thus preventing the excessive erosion of this sacred site.
