Meez is a web-based company that offers its online members the ability to create, personalize, and export three-dimensional personas or "avatars." Meez members can then go on to animate their avatars and place them in one of a variety of environments or "scenes." Users personalize their avatars by choosing from a selection of clothing, hairstyles, tattoos, accessories, backgrounds and fun animations that enable them to express how they wish to be seen online. Once completed, Meez avatars can be used as personal identifiers all over the Internet: on personal profiles at social media sites such as myspace and facebook, as IM icons in such programs as AIM, and on blogs such as xanga and Livejournal. Meez's ultimate goal is to offer its users a way to express their real-world passions in the virtual world.
So far, Meez has signed agreements with Major League Baseball and The National Hockey League to provide virtual sports merchandise for sports fans across the web. Baseball fans are already avidly dressing their bat-swinging avatars in Giants jerseys and Yankees caps.
Meez is entirely browser-based, with no need to download additional client software, and it works on Windows, Macintosh and Linux PCs.
Meez was developed by Donnerwood Media, an online entertainment company based in San Francisco. It launched on March 28th, 2006, so it is still in beta.
Meez User Benefits
At Meez.com, users create their avatars through a point-and-click process. First, users modify the appearance of their Meez avatar by adjusting individual physical characteristics like head shape, skin tone, hair style/color and eye color. Then they proceed to the "Meezmall."
Meezmall. At the Meezmall, consumers can choose from a large selection of clothing, hairstyles, piercings, accessories, backgrounds and fun animations. The MeezMall includes thousands of free items, as well as a collection of premium items that consumers can purchase to make their avatar that much more personal. Premium branded content currently includes baseball jerseys and caps from Major League Baseball®, as well as hockey jerseys from The National Hockey League®.
Animations. Meez avatars are built using the same technology that producers use to create video games, so consumers can animate their Meez. With a single click, users can have their Meez avatar engage in the activities they’re passionate about – playing the guitar, riding a surfboard, juggling a soccer ball, and many more.
Export. Once a Meez avatar has been saved, it can be exported as an HTML link or JPG image to programs and websites such as myspace, facebook, and AIM. Users can also export an animated version of their Meez.
