Edited. Apparently I heard this somewhere, although I don't recall where, it was a credible source. I did some research and can't find anything solidly substantiating it (possibly as a beta version).

The article says "It was the most widely used non-proprietary software in the visual effects and animation industries", but its license is listed as proprietary. I'm editing this out for now.
