Muscovy (also Moscovia, Moscovie, Moskovia; in Russian: Московия) is a historical European term for the Principality of Moscow and the Grand Duchy of Moscow. It may also refer to one of the following:
- The name of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, changed for "Russia" by Tsar Peter I in the early 18th century. The goal of this change was to establish a connection between Muscovy and medieval state of Kievan Rus', thus claiming the right of Moscow to possess all the lands of Rus'.
- Early Tsardom of Russia (16th—17th centuries; e.g., Discovery of Muscovy[1] by Richard Hakluyt or John Milton's A brief History of Moscovia)
- "Muscovy" and "Muscovites" continued to be used (sometimes disparaginly) for "Russia" and "Russians", long after it ceased to be the formal name, and also in times when Moscow was not the capital of Russia (e.g. Disraeli, in a letter to Queen Victoria, proposed "to clear Central Asia of Muscovites").
- Muscovia (book) (1586) by Antonio Possevino[2]
- Moscovia Monastery
- Muscovy Company
- Muscovy Duck (Cairina moschata).
- Muscovy Glass or Muscovite, a mineral.
- Muscovy Levee, on the Lytle Creek, in Muscoy, San Bernardino County, California.
- Muscovy Lilac, a variety of the Common Lilac (Syringa vulgaris).
- Muscovy Street, in the City of London, near the Tower of London.
- Moskovia Airlines
- A term for a "parallel world" Russia in Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials
- "Moscovia" is a collective name for the city and its associated wilderness in the Ragnarok Online MMORPG game.
