Stanislav Shalunov (born 1 Oct 1973) is a networking engineer (a.k.a. Internet Architect), and co-founder of Opengarden,[1][2][3] that enables peer-to-peer mobile Internet connection sharing. Stanislav is known for his designed congestion control, uTP/LEDBAT[4] that improves peer-to-peer network coverage and speed to replace TCP/IP protocol.[5] According to an article published in fastcolabs.com, Shalunov's congestion protocol carries between 13% and 20% of all traffic moving across the Internet.[6][7] He started working on building peer-to-peer file-sharing service at Internet2 consortium that he finished while working for BitTorrent. The software was called as Low Extra Delay Background Transport or LEDBT.[8][9] This control mechanism was later used by Apple and BitTorrent. He earned his Mathematics with minor in Computer Science from University of Wisconsin-Madison and Masters of Mathematics and Computer Science from Moscow State University.
Business career
Stanislav founded a company, Plicto that was acquired by BitTorrent and its implementations in the company was known as uTP that carriers 95% of BitTorrent traffic.[10] In 2011, he started a company called Open Garden with Micha Benoliel and Greg Hazel that initially introduced a tethering app which allowed users to share internet connectivity between laptop and Android phone.[11][12][13] The idea of starting Open Garden came to Shalunov when he along with other co-founders saw opportunity for building an application for Peer-to-peer connections with physical connectivity.[14][15]
