History

GridPoint was founded in 2003 by Peter L. Corsell and quickly established itself as a thought leader in energy management solutions through developing cutting-edge technologies for the modern grid. Through its early growth and into 2008, GridPoint provided solutions for utilities such as GridPoint’s Smart Grid Platform and as the energy efficiency market evolved, GridPoint grew into the energy management and analytics space serving customers in the commercial/industrial, government, and utility markets.

Today, GridPoint is an established leader in energy management systems,[1] providing enterprises, government agencies, and utilities with the tools to implement and maintain sustainable energy management practices.

Driving Factors for Enterprise Energy Management and Sustainability Adoption

There are many forces shaping today’s energy market. The first two are economic and political drivers. First, analysts with the U.S. Energy Administration estimate that there will be a 1.9% real annual price increase (after inflation), and 46% real increase over the next 20 years.[2] Second, enterprises are increasingly focused on their energy and sustainability practices so that they may minimize energy consumption, expenses and carbon emissions, as well as meet increasing government regulations.

The third main driver is technology. With the emergence of the Software as a Service (SaaS) model, enterprises are able to implement sophisticated systems across large geographies and execute daily business functions with minimal expense and complexity. Furthermore, the proliferation of smart, low cost, and wireless energy endpoints enables real-time data collection and control to be broadly deployed across enterprises. Finally, enterprises can take the real-time data from these smart endpoints and push their efficiency measures even further with advanced data aggregation and deep analytics to drive optimization in real-time and over the long-term.

Last, commonly accepted standards and guidelines presented by industry organizations have also encouraged businesses to increase building efficiency and achieve greater sustainability. For example, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) newest standard, 90.1-2013, to be published in September 2013 introduces requirements for electrical energy monitoring, including measurement devices, tenant monitoring, and refined energy usage reporting for all non-residential buildings larger than 10,000 ft2 and tenant spaces larger than 5,000 ft2.[3] This standard goes beyond the existing 2010 standard that already required automatic lighting shutoff generally and HVAC controls for very large facilities (50,000 ft2), and requires businesses to make additional investments in submetering technology to achieve greater efficiency.

In another instance, the U.S. Green Building Council continues to spur adoption of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requiring building owners to measure and verify through the continuous use of metering equipment, and employ system-level metering covering at least 40% or 80% of the total expected annual energy consumption of the building.

Selected Current Projects

Data-driven Energy Management and Sustainability

The perpetual growth of energy costs over the last few decades has spurred the adoption of intelligent energy solutions, energy efficiency, and sustainability for enterprises across the country. In 2012, the U.S. Energy Information Administration cited commercial and industrial energy use accounted for 53% of all non-transportation energy spending in the U.S.[4] In addition, government-backed Energy Star suggests more than $202.3 billion is spent annually, 30% of which is inefficient or unnecessary.[5] It goes on to state that a $20 billion of energy spend could be avoided with a 10% efficient improvement. As such, energy management systems (EMS) and their associated cost savings and sustainability opportunities are increasingly vital to enterprise cost control and competitive strategies. The emergence of relatively inexpensive computing, data storage, and cloud deployment options have already transformed many industries, and are now poised to do the same for enterprise energy management.

To manage costs and improve efficiency businesses have increasingly invested in submetering and monitoring market solutions that collect energy data from submetered devices, which is then aggregated and analyzed through cloud-based software applications. The ability to see energy production and consumption on an enterprise level, as well as respond to energy performance and equipment issues through a comprehensive set of alarms and reporting functionality, has allowed businesses to achieve greater efficiency with added insight into business continuity, environmental conditions, and emissions, ultimately reducing capital expenditures.

In 2008, GridPoint turned its focus to the enterprise energy management and sustainability market. Building on its utility-focused energy management knowledge, the company focused its solution portfolio on enterprise energy management systems designed to allow energy, facility, and sustainability managers to effectively and affordably reduce energy consumption, expenses and carbon emissions across a multi-site enterprise. The GridPoint Energy Manager cloud-based software suite allows enterprises to manage and monitor energy-consuming products, such as lighting, refrigeration, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) through a dynamic set of control and submetering devices.

The platform has evolved to include measuring, monitoring, alarming, and demand response and validation functionality for not only energy-consuming devices, but energy generating devices as well, including solar energy, fuel cells, wind and more. In 2010, GridPoint introduced its GridPoint Managed Services division, including technical support, control support services, energy advisory services, and site monitoring to aid customers in achieving direct and indirect energy savings, mitigate risk, and optimize capital expense utilization.

Utility Engagement and Collaboration

Since its founding, GridPoint has continued to focus a portion of its business on the utility sector, providing enterprise efficiency and load management solutions to support utility companies’ commercial and industrial base through energy management and submetering systems providing visibility into energy consumption patterns, and to capture and dispatch of energy by storage assets located in utility's transmission and distribution systems T&D systems. Additionally, GridPoint's software-based dashboards consist of tools that provide insight into residential energy consumption, predicted energy usage, savings achieved, and carbon impact.
