Template:Contains Korean text Sampo Generation (Korean: 삼포세대) is a new word in South Korea. It means that is a generation who gives up courtship, marriage and childbirth. Many of young generation have given up those three things because of Social pressures and economical problem such as rocketing prices, tuition, house prices and so on in South Korea.[1] It is also similar with 'Satori Generation' in Japan.[2]

The origin of the word

This term was used by special reports team of Kyunghyang Shinmun when they published "talking about the welfare state(ko:복지국가를 말한다)".They defined this word as the rising generation who had unstable jobs, student loan repayment, precarious preparation for employment and etc postponed a love, marriage and childbirth without any promises.[3]Burden of family in South Korea reached the limit because the family has been taken over welfare that South Korea government didn't accept responsibility for. Eventually Sampo generation showed that the structure of the traditional family unit was disintegrating at an alarming rate. This word started to spread through various media and internet. And it also means that it shows young generation's life and the task of our society.

New economics of marriage

Regarding this term, Korea has new trend about marriage. According to marriage consultancy Duo, over 34 percent of 1,446 women surveyed prioritized financial capability and job in choosing a future husband, followed by 30 percent putting importance on personality and 9 percent on looks. Welcome to modern society where singledom has become a greater problem than unemployment not because people have failed to meet the right one but because they do not have enough economic power to get married.[4]
