Arbogast is an ancient name with its origins in the tribe of the Salian Franks, first attested with Arbogastes, a 4th-century Frankish general in the late Roman army.
Notable Arbogasts include one of the four authors of the Salic Law, and a count in the Court of Trier. St. Arbogast came from Ireland to Alsace and took the name of Arbogast there. The name may be read in an Elder Futhark inscription, on the lid of the Schretzheim bulla, dated c. AD 600, which has the runic inscription arogisd.
