Brasão da Família Sousa

D. Egas Gomes de Sousa (1035 -?) was a portuguese noble of County of Portugal and the first of his line to use the surname Sousa. He was Lord of the House of Sousa and of Felgueiras.

Biografy

He served as governor of the entire region of Entre Douro e Minho . He was captain-general, and as such in combat he won the King of Tunis , in a battle near the town of Beja. This act earned him add to his coat of arms, the epithet: "Bats of Aragon", the four crescents that the said king of Tunis bringing in their flags . He was buried in the Monastery of Pombeiro .

Family

He was the son of D. Gomes Echigues (1010-?), and his 1st wife, Gontronde Moniz de Touro (1060-?), daughter of Munio Moniz de Bierzo (1030-1097), Count of Bierzo and Muniadona Moniz (?-1065). Married in 1050 with Gontinha Gonçalves da Maia (1040-?), daughter of Gonzalo Trastamires, Lord of Maia and Mécia Rodrigues and a great-great-grandaughter of king Ramiro II of León, their had:

  • D. Mem Viegas de Sousa (1070-1130) married Teresa Fernandes de Marnel,
  • D. Gomes Viegas,
  • D. Paio Nunes de Sousa

His sister D. Sancha Gomes de Sousa was princess of Celanova, married with Nuno de Celanova. D. Egas Gomes de Sousa was a first cousin of Theresa, Countess of Portugal, mother of the Portuguese 1st King Afonso I of Portugal and of Elvira of Castile, Countess of Toulouse.
