Jonathan Sprout (born April 12, 1952) is a songwriter, performer and recording artist from Pennsylvania, USA. He has released nine albums, the last seven of which feature children's music. His three most recent albums feature original songs about specific American heroes. His recordings have garnered awards from organizations including The Parents' Choice Awards, NAPPA and the Film Advisory Board.
Biography
Jonathan Sprout was born John Wells Sprout, Jr. in Hightstown, New Jersey. His high school years were spent at The Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, where he graduated cum laude, with top honors. Sprout developed his love of music while attending Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, participated in competitive swimming, and was a member of Cap and Dagger, the campus theatre organization. He played small acting parts in Marat Sade, The Alchemist and The Wizard of Oz. Sprout received his B.A. in psychology from Bucknell in 1974.
In 1974, Sprout wrote two songs for an album recorded by The Lettermen, including the title track "To A Friend".
During the years immediately following college, he performed regularly in the ski resort of Killington, Vermont; in Estes Park, Colorado; and in Lake Placid, New York. His first album, "Angel's Everywhere" (Green Mountain Records, 1978) was a production of original writings from those years.
In 1979, he formed the band "Light" to promote his new original work. Though the band only lasted two years, it was instrumental in introducing Jonathan to ensemble work and collaborative writing.
Musical Career
Jonathan Sprout performed his American Heroes concerts 24 times beginning in the late 1980s at Steckel Elementary School in Whitehall, PA
He began an affiliation as a school concert performer with the Arts Council of the Morris Area, NJ in 1996 and has been a member of the Children’s Music Network since 1989. Sprout’s early career as a children’s performer included a concert at the Kelsey Theatre in West Windsor, NJ.
Sprout contributed a track to the Healthy Foods for Thought CD and his 9th album, American Heroes #3, was nominated at the 52nd annual Grammy Awards 2010 in Los Angeles, CA in the Best Music for Children category.
