On Sunday, 6 April 2014, the Ukrainian defense ministry announced the shooting death of a Ukrainian naval officer in the village of Novofedorivka. The incident which took place outside the [[Novofedorivka Air Base]], while a group of Ukrainian soldiers, reportedly drunk, were on their way to the hostel where they were staying, awaiting relocation to mainland Ukraine, when they passed a group of Russian infantry soldiers guarding the entry way to the Air Base where they were previously stationed.
