Dundee Community Garden is a community garden in the Dundee neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. The garden site is located at 4902 Underwood.[1] Within the expanding group of community gardens in Omaha in recent years, Dundee Community Garden is one of the best established [2] and most notable. [3] Dundee Community Garden is a member of the American Community Gardening Association.[4]

History

The garden was founded on a vacant lot in 2009 by a group of local residents.[5] In early 2013, Dundee Community Garden Inc., received non-profit status as a 501(c)(3) organization.[6] After a fundraising campaign, which included support from the Sherwood Foundation and the Peter Kiewit Foundation, on 15 May 2013, DCG purchased the land from the previous owner.[7] In June of 2013, infrastructure improvements were made to the property, including the addition of two water hydrants, and the planting of fruit trees.

Activities

As a local community open space, the garden site has served a variety of community purposes, including conversations and press conferences regarding civic neighborhood improvement projects.[8] Each August, members carry a giant carrot in the annual Dundee Day Parade.

Dundee Community Garden was one of eight gardens on the inaugural "Tour de Gardens" bicycle tour of garden sites across Omaha in 2012, an event that was an outgrowth of discussion between Portland, Oregon and Omaha representatives at a League of Cities conference. Mary Green, President of the Dundee Community Garden board, described the event as including eight community gardens and an urban orchard, and being "a wonderful day for a bike ride."[9] Dundee Community Garden was featured again on the second annual Tour.[10]

A series of educational workshops is organized by Dundee Community Garden, and hosted at the nearby A.V. Sorensen Community Center.[2]

Organization

In 2013, the garden had a nine-member board of directors.[11] The Dundee Community Garden's guidelines and rules are provided as a model for others, at the Douglas County, Nebraska's "start a community garden" website.[12]
