3CX Phone System is a software based private branch exchange (PBX) based on the SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) standard. It enables extensions to make calls via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. 3CX Phone System for Windows is an IP business phone system that completely replaces proprietary PBX systems, supports standard SIP soft/hard phones, VoIP services and traditional PSTN phone lines. Its web-based administration makes phone system management easy. 3CX Phone System eliminates the phone wiring network and allows users to easily work remotely.
History
3CX Phone System for Windows was developed by 3CX and first published as a free IP PBX product in 2006. The product was intended to provide a VoIP solution for use in a Microsoft Windows environment.[1]
The first commercial edition of the product was launched in 2007. Reviews of the product have noted its easy configuration, management, and hardware compatibility.[2][3][4][5] Smith on VoIP commented in a blog post about 3CX that it was very easy to use, but did not have all the features its competitors provide.[6]
Windows IT Pro wrote about 3CX's ability to run in a virtual environment such as VMware or Hyper-V.[7]
In 2009, it was featured on the internet TV show Hak5.[8]
It was awarded an Editors Best Award in 2008 by Windows IT Pro Magazine,[9] a gold award by WindowsNetworking[10] and a 'Best Buy' award by Computer Shopper.[11]
