The 2014 Saharnpur Riots occurred on 25th July of that year in the city of Saharanpur in the state of Uttar Pardesh in India. The riots occurred between Muslims, incited by Muharram Ali Pappu and Sikhs of Shri Guru Singh Sabha, of over a piece of Land.[1] 3 people were killed and several got injured. The ruling Samajwadi Party calls it an act of RSS where BJP blames ISI[2] though UP cops say that riot was well planned to divide member of both minority communities.[3][4]
Cause
The root of clashes is land dispute between Pappu and Gurudwara Singh Sabha in Kutubsher area. The land is adjacent to Gurdwara near railway station on which both groups claims ownership. On 25th July, members of Gurdwara flagged off the construction to expand Gurdwara premises [5] which broke into clashes the next day.
The Gurdwara management had purchased land for 15 years but Pappu claim the land belong to Mosque and Wakf Board and there cannot be construction without their permission. A petition was filled in civil court 10 years back by Moharram Ali Pappu in Civil court stating land belong to Mosque.
In May 2013, Additional district judge passed order that land belong to Gurdwara.
