The Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa, or Jyotiṣavedāṅga (Devanagari वेदाङ्ग ज्योतिष) is the earliest known Indian text on astronomy and astrology (Jyotisha), dated to 1400-1200 BCE (700-600 BCE, according to Michael Witzel).[1][1][2] The extant text is dated to the final centuries BCE.[3]
It was redacted by Lagadha (Sanskrit: लगध, IPA: [ləɡəd̪ʱə]), who was, as per Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya[4] and others,[5][6][7][8][9] from Kashmir.
The text is foundational to the Vedanga discipline of Jyotisha.
