Manhasset Secondary School is a four-year public high school and middle school located in Manhasset, Nassau County, New York on the North Shore of Long Island. Manhasset High School consistently ranks among the top 100 High Schools in America.

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 785 students and 59.3 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 13.3:1.[1]

Building history

  • The secondary school building was built in 1934 as a project of the Works Progress Administration. It and Musney Park School were designed by the firm Tooker & Marsh. It has undergone multiple extensions and renovations throughout the ears, but remains mostly intact. The interior main hallway and auditorium underwent restoration in 2009. It is currently pending a listing on the National Register of Historic places.

Sports

  • Manhasset's team nickname is the Indians, and the school colors are orange and blue.
  • Varsity sports at Manhasset High School include baseball, football, basketball, field hockey, cross country, track, volleyball, lacrosse,[2] tennis, soccer, swimming, crew, fencing, badminton, golf, bowling and wrestling.

Lacrosse

  • In 1932, Manhasset established the first HS lacrosse team on Long Island while Garden City followed shortly after in 1934.[3] A yearly lacrosse tradition known as the "Woodstick Classic" emerged between the schools, an event which is attended by thousands every year, and is currently the nation's longest continuous boys lacrosse rivalry.[4]
  • Since 1995, Manhasset has won the Class B State Championship one time : 1995, and Class C State Championship three times:[2] 2004,2009 and 2010. [citation needed]
  • For the past six years since 2004, the Manhasset Indians have been ranked among the top 100 best lacrosse teams in the country (Ranked by Laxpower), and have finished among the top three on that list, three different times during that span.[citation needed]
  • In 2009 and 2010, the boys lacrosse team won the Class C state championship, making back-to-back state titles for the first time in school history.[citation needed]

Rowing

  • In 2008, the Boys Junior 4+ boat won the Scholastic National Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee,[5] the prestigious Stotesbury Cup regatta, and the New York State Championship regatta.
  • The following year, in 2009, the Boys Senior 4+ won back-to-back National titles.[6][7] They also placed first in both the New York State Championship regatta and the New Jersey State Championship regatta that year. The Girls Junior 4+ boat also won the Scholastic National Regatta and placed 4th in the world famous Head of the Charles Regatta.
  • In 2010 the Girls Lightweight 4+ boat won New York State Championship regatta and the Scholastic National Regatta. They also took second place Second at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

Music

This year eight choirs will involve over 300 students in singing: Symphonic Choir, Concert Choir I, Concert Choir II, Women's Chorus, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Select Ensemble, Kinsmen, Varsity Kinsmen.[2]

Kinsmen is the elite men's choir with 35 members.
