xkcd's What-If series is self described as Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions.[1] Starting July 10, 2012, initially every Tuesday morning, a new What-If is published, in response to a reader-submitted question.[2]

On March 12, 2014, a book was announced containing expanded What-Ifs. The book came out on September 2, 2014.[3][4][5]

On July 22, 2014, Randall Munroe announced that he would be going on a book tour from the release date until September 14, 2014.[6]

On September 10, 2014, What If? book entered the New York Times nonfiction hardcover best-seller list, in the first place.[7]
