Oles Buzina (Ukrainian: Оле́сь Олексі́йович Бузина́; 13 July 1969[1] – 16 April 2015) was a pro-Russian[2] Ukrainian journalist, writer, and politician for the Russian Bloc party, born in Kiev. He was opposed to the post-Maidan Ukrainian government. He was murdered on 16 April 2015 not far from his flat in Kiev.[3][4]
Biography
Born July 13, 1969 in Kiev. In 1992 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (specialty "teacher of Russian language and literature").[1] He then started a career in journalism.[1] From 2007 he was a journalist at Segodnya.[5] Buzina was married and a father of one daughter. In the 2012 Ukrainian parliamentary election Buzina tried to win a constituency seat in Kiev for Russian Bloc.[6] But he failed to win parliamentary representation.[7] In constituency 223 his 8.22% was not enough.[6]
Literary views
Their Favorite books were "A hero of our time" by Mikhail Lermontov and "The White Guard" by Mikhail Bulgakov[8].
Political views
Known for his pro-Russian stance, Buzina was in favour of peace between Russia and Ukraine. He believed that Russians, Belarusians and Ukrainians are one nation, opposed the current government of Ukraine and worked for Russian media.[9]
Murder
On April 15, 2015, one day before Buzina was murdered, Oleg Kalashnikov, who also was in opposition to the government, was shot to death in Kiev. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called Buzina's murder "a deliberate act which plays into the hands of our enemies."[10]
International reaction
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on live Russian TV that this murder was a political one and offered his condolences to the family of the victim.[11]
