Radius Books is a non-profit art book publishing company, with a focus on photography and fine art, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico.[1] Operating on the belief that the arts—all arts—are vital to our culture, Radius Books encourages and publishes books of artistic and educational value for a wide audience.[2] Through wide-reaching publication, education, and donation programs, they create and promote an ongoing dialogue among writers, thinkers, artists, teachers, and readers. Co-publishing partners include David Zwirner Gallery, Harvard Peabody Museum Press, Art Institute of Chicago, and Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

History

The company was established in 2007 by co-founders David Chickey (publisher, editor, book designer), Darius Himes (editor),[3] David Skolkin (production), and Joanna Hurley (marketing and public relations).[4]

In the first year, Radius Books published 4 titles (Mark Klett, "Saguaros"; Judy Tuwalestiwa, "Mapping Water"; "Johnnie Winona Ross"; and "Otto Donald Rogers").

From 2008 to 2010, the company published 8 titles each year, and from 2011 to 2015 has published 15 to 20 titles each year that focus on a wide variety of artists and photographers.[5]

Donation Program

Radius Books donates copies of every book published to libraries across the United States. The library donation program was conceived and initiated as a means to bring artistic visions to a wider audience, particularly youth and young adults. The current list of served libraries and schools is 527, and includes all 50 US states. Some of the institutions consist of, Ash Creek Elementary School District, Denver Public Library, New Mexico State University Library, and Memphis College of Art.

Awards

Design and publishing awards include: multiple awards from the AIGA (50 books/ 50 covers competition); First place from the Independent Publisher Book Awards; American Association of Museums Publishing competition (over ten including two first place awards in the last three years); Publishers Association of the West (over 14 in the last ten years); Infinity Awards for best photographic book of the year (International Center for Photography); also included on the best books lists from TIME magazine, Photo District News, photo-eye, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Bookforum among others.
