The Barbara JordanMickey Leland School of Public Affairs is named after two Houston’s most prominent public servants. It has an outstanding undergraduate/graduate program at one of the nation’s largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Introduction

The Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs, also referred to as BJMLSPA,[1] is a Political Science and Public Administration School within Texas Southern University (TSU) in Houston, Texas, United States. The school offers undergraduate degrees in Administration of Justice, Political Science, Public Affairs, Emergency Management and Homeland Security and a minor in Military Science. It also offers master’s degrees in Executive Masters of Public Administration (eMPA), Administration of Justice, Public Administration, Urban Planning and Environmental Policy also grants Ph.D. degrees.

Departments & Centers

The School offers instruction, research and professional services through three departments in Political Science, Administration of Justice and Urban Planning and Environmental Planning (UPEP). The Department of Political Science offers undergraduate degrees in Public Affairs, Political Science as well as Master’s degrees in Public Administration. The graduates of this department are widely employed by nonprofit organizations, private companies, institutions and hospitals. The department seeks to educate students for careers in law, politics, journalism, public policy analysis, corporate public affairs, foreign relations etc. The Department on Administration of Justice offers a undergraduate degree in Administration of Justice, an Executive Masters of AJ and a Ph.D. in Administration of Justice; the department seeks to educate students for careers in Transportation security, Immigration, Custom Enforcement, law enforcement, Judiciary, Homeland Security, Institutional services and many other related careers. The Department of Urban Planning and Environmental Planning only offers professional services through two graduate degree programs, Masters in Urban Planning and Environmental Planning (MUPEP) and a Doctoral of Philosophy (PhD) in Urban Planning and Environmental Policy. The department offers a Dual Masters in Urban Planning and Environmental Planning (MUPEP) / Juris Doctorate (JD) with the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.
