Dr. Anil Kumar Kohli widely known as A. K. Kohli is an Indian nuclear engineer currently serving as the Chief Executive of the Board of Radiation and Isotope Technology (BRIT),[1] a constituent unit of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE),[2] Government of India; which is the unit responsible for development, production and supply of radiation technology products including sealed radiation sources,[3] radiopharmaceuticals,[4] labeled compounds[5] and self-luminous sources for industrial, healthcare, defense and other sectors.

BRIT is also involved in provision of radiation processing services and gamma scanning of process columns and Radiotracer services for petrochemical industries.[6] BRIT is also responsible for promoting setting up of radiation processing plants in the country.

Prior to assuming the current position in January 2006, Dr. Kohli had served as Senior General Manager (Engineering Design and Quality Assurance), BRIT. Before joining BRIT he had worked in Reactor Engineering Division and later Refueling Technology Division at BARC. He has also worked as Engineer-in-charge, Consulting Services and Mechanical Technologies at Technology Transfer and Collaboration Division of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

Dr. Kohli’s joining of Board of Radiation & Isotope Technology has helped the organization attaining newer heights[7] His efforts in design and development of new products which include safe and secure laboratory irradiators, radiation processing plants for sterilization of medical & food products, radiography exposure devices, mobile hot cell etc. which required in-depth knowledge of various engineering disciplines are outstanding. After his taking over as Chief Executive, Board of Radiation & Isotope Technology, tremendous progress has been shown by the organization.[8]

Education and career

Dr. Kohli graduated in mechanical engineering from Delhi College of Engineering in 1974. He started his career in Reactor Engineering Division (RED) of BARC[9] after completing training with 18th batch of BARC’s Training School. He was involved in development of Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) fuel handling equipment and later on undertook development of Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) fuel handling system.

During his tenure in RED, he completed his Master of Technology (Design of Mechanical Equipment) from IIT Delhi[11] with a CGPA of 10.0 on 10.0. He later became part of Refueling Technology Division and undertook design and analysis of various transportation casks for carrying radioactive materials. He was instrumental in setting up of Tribology Laboratory in BARC for carrying out tribological studies for design and development of PHWR and PFBR fuel handling equipment. He has been a faculty at BARC Training School for teaching Fast Reactor Engineering and Machine Design courses.

In 1996, he was selected to join newly formed Technology Transfer and Collaboration Division of BARC as Engineer-in-charge, Consultancy Services and Mechanical Technologies. He made considerable contributions in streamlining the procedures for technology transfer process as well as provision of high tech consultancy services to outside industry. Alongside, he continued his studies on tribological aspects of Radiation Resistant Solid Lubricants and earned his Ph.D. from IIT Delhi in 1999.

He joined BRIT in the year 2001. Before elevation to the post of Chief Executive, he has served as Senior General Manager (Engg. Design and Quality Assurance) and later looked after the additional responsibility of Customer Support Services function also which encompasses overall activities which has about 500 employees on its rolls.[12]

Dr. Kohli was born in New Delhi to Rup Lal Kohli and Lila Vati Kohli in 1953. He had a brilliant academic career and finished his graduation in 1974 and joined BARC. He got married to Rita and they have two sons. The elder one, Rajat Kohli, did his management diploma from IIM Lucknow and joined Citibank. Currently, he is Head India -Institutional Clients Group of BNP Paribas based in Mumbai. The younger son, Rohan Kohli, did his B.Tech from IIT Bombay and joined Deutsche Bank as an Analyst. At present, he is a Derivatives Trader with Edelweiss, Singapore.

Dr. Kohli has interests in reading, creative activities and problem solving. He loves swimming and keenly follows cricket.

Contributions to propagation of radiation processing plant in the country

Dr. A. K. Kohli has made significant contributions to the setting up of radiation processing plants for both sterilization of disposable medical products & food irradiation in the country. BRIT’s own plants are being operated in an excellent manner for number of years.[13][14] ISOMED[15] plant which was set up in 1974 successfully introduced radiation sterilization of disposable medical products in the country. The RPP, Vashi plant has immensely helped in introducing radiation processing of food in the country. KRUSHAK[16] plant at Lasalgaon enabled restart of mango export to USA after a very long gap, thanks to acceptance of irradiation as quarantine treatment by USA and KRUSHAK’s suitability for the purpose.

Dr. Kohli has been instrumental in ensuring that the plants are operated in safe manner and are in accordance with all applicable standards.

Dr. Kohli earlier as Senior General Manager and later as Chief Executive took number of steps in popularizing radiation processing in the country.[17][18][19] Simultaneously, steps were taken to augment the indigenous Co-60 production capacity to meet the increasing demand from the upcoming radiation processing plants. BRIT entered into a large number of MoUs with budding entrepreneurs who showed interest in setting up such plants. Till March 2015, 14 plants under MoU with BRIT are operational and number of other plants are in various stages of construction and planning.

He is also responsible for introduction of several new products suitable for radiation processing which are regularly being radiation processed at number of plants and contributing to the national exchequer.[20]

Reuse and recycle of radioactive sources

BRIT is one of the major producers of radiation sources in the world and has been in the business for number of decades. BRIT also manufacture different radiation technology equipment including gamma chambers, blood irradiators, radiography exposure devices etc., many of which are reaching end of their useful life. Large number of decayed sources are received from Co-60 teletherapy and Cs-137 brachytherapy applicators.

Dr. Kohli has devised various arrangements for reuse and recycle of such sources to ensure that minimum number goes for disposal. All decayed teletherapy sources are incorporated into industrial irradiator sources preventing any teletherapy source to have gone for disposal so far. A special decayed radiography source removal was designed by which the sources could be directly detached from the pigtail and collected in a chamber of shielded flask for recovery of iridium discs at a later date. Recovery of Cs-137 from old teletherapy equipment and reusing it in glass form as brachytherapy source also has been done.

Dr. Kohli has attended number of IAEA’s Consultancy and Technical Meetings on this subject and there are number of publications to his credit.

Dr. A.K. Kohli is Distinguished Scientist and President,[21] National Association for Applications of Radioisotopes and Radiation in Industry (NAARRI) since 2007. NAARRI is a professional body for propagation of applications of radiation in the country.

He is Member, World Institute of Nuclear Security (WINS).

He is life member of

He is member of Board of Strategic Studies of Homi Bhabha National Institute(HBNI)[25] and Visiting Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Kalasalingam University.[26][27] He is also on the Board of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Government of Karnataka, Bengaluru.

He is recipient of Indian Nuclear Society’s Outstanding Service Award – 2009 for his contributions in the field of radiation and radioisotope related applications. He has won three Group Achievement Awards for Excellence in Science, Engineering and Technology Award Scheme of DAE. Two of these awards were in the capacity of Group Leader.

He is Chairman, Radiation Technology and Applications Committee of Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences, Department of Atomic Energy.
