Raised in a Catholic family in [[Washington, DC]], Johnson began yodeling in the 1950s, influenced by the music of [[Jimmie Rodgers]], [[Gene Autry]], and [[Roy Rogers]], and by the "[[Tarzan yell]]" of actor [[Johnny Weissmuller]].
