In the spring of 1985, Johnson signed a contract to play and coach for the Helsinki Rooters in Helsinki, Finland that coming summer. In his first season, the Roosters won the Bronze Medal and Johnson was named the Finnish Championship Leauge's Most Valuable American Player on defense. In 1986, the Roosters won the Gold Medal. After his second season with the Roosters, Johnson went back to William Jewell College to become the Defensive Coordinator for his former Head Coach, Vic Wallace. After the 1986 season at Jewell, Johnson received an offer to go play in Italy. In the spring of 1987, Johnson played in the town of Modena, Italy on the Modena Falchi (Falcolns). Not only did Johnson play middle linebacker for the Falchi, he was also the teams punter. It was after his only season in Italy that Johnson decided to retire from playing and concentrate on pursuing a coaching career in Europe and in the United States. He figured out that this dream was possible if he chose Finland as his European home. Finland plays it's season in the summer and this would time up nicely with the fall season back in the U.S.
